Folding dining table Drop Leaf HM6, walnut
A fresh edition of medieval design
Hvidt & Mølgaard
The range of tables, chairs and lighting fixtures has been rediscovered from medieval drawings by modernists Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen and is now part of the family of the renowned Danish interior design brand & Tradition. Some of them are produced for the first time.
Both designers from Copenhagen were skilled furniture makers and are known for the ease of their work. Their work once paved the way for affordable international furniture trade and production.
The tradition-respecting interior brand & Tradition 2020 spring collection includes Hvidt & Mølgaard's elegant Dawn chair, various variations of the Drop Leaf table, the modular Pinwheel coffee table and the sculptural Tripod floor lamp.
Hvidt & Mølgaard designed the Drop Leaf table in 1956, when there was a desire to create something versatile that would blend in with its surroundings and environment. The result is a solid wood table with round shapes that can be easily folded thanks to its clever design in many ways - thanks to the hinges on either side of the long center plate, a half-shaped dining table is lowered on one side and easily pushed against the wall to save space; lowering the tiles on both sides creates a console table that waits for its time to dine beautifully by the wall.
The tabletop, as the name implies ('leaf'), finds inspiration in the round shape of the leaf. The table is available in walnut and oak, which were especially loved in the Middle Ages. The modern contrast to the molded wood is the eye-catching brass hinges and details.
